Potting up
Your amaryllis

Setting the Stage for Spectacular Blooms

Congratulations on your new amaryllis bulb! Potting it up correctly is the first step to enjoying its spectacular blooms. Whether you’re new to gardening or an experienced plant lover, we will guide you through the process to ensure your amaryllis is set to flourish.

Planting Your Amaryllis Bulb:

Amaryllis bulbs become active when temperatures rise. If your unsprouted bulb begins sprouting, plant it right away in well-draining potting soil.

Storage Before Planting

  • If planting needs to be delayed, store bulbs in a cool place between 5°C to 10°C (40°F to 50°F), such as a refrigerator’s vegetable drawer, but not alongside food.
  • Store loose bulbs in a paper bag with ventilation holes, to allow airflow.

Preparing the Pot and Soil:

Pot Selection

  • Choose a pot that’s 2.5 – 5cm (1-2″)  wider than the bulb with a depth of at least 10cm (4”).
  • The pot must have drainage holes to prevent root rot.

Soil Choice

  • Use well-draining potting soil with a pH 6.0 to 6.8 avoiding no tree bark or fresh manure.
  • Ensure the soil mix provides a good balance between moisture retention and drainage.

Planting Your Bulb:

Partially fill the pot with soil, leaving room for the bulb and its roots.

  • Create a hole in the center for the bulb, ensuring the roots can hang freely.
  • Place the bulb in the hole, with its top third, including the neck, exposed above the soil.
  • Fill in around the bulb with more soil, gently pressing down to eliminate air pockets.
  • Ensure the soil is firm but not compact, allowing water to penetrate.
  • Water the bulb once it’s planted, then wait 10 days until the next watering.
  •

Aftercare:

Lighting and Location

Place the pot in a warm, bright spot, but away from direct sunlight until it fully sprouts.

Watering

Keep the soil slightly moist, increasing watering as growth progresses.

Gradually move the plant to a sunnier spot as it grows.
